WHAT IS CBT?

CBT, or Compulsory Basic Training, is your introduction to motorcycling.

LEARN. PRACTICE. RIDE.

Your training day is divided into five action-packed parts.
You’ll start with essential classroom learning, progress to hands-on on-site
riding practice, and finish with a fully assessed road ride.

Each stage is designed to build your skills, confidence, and readiness,
ensuring you’re prepared to ride safely
and enjoyably on the road.

EYES ON THE ROAD

If you require glasses or contact lenses, please bring them with you.
After a quick eyesight check, your instructor will outline the course, explain
what to expect, and guide you through the plan for the day.

They will also share practical guidance such as, recommended clothing,
so you arrive at your ride feeling comfortable, confident, and ready to go.

RIDE SMART: CONTROLS & CARE

Once you’ve been introduced to the controls of your motorcycle, you’ll have
dedicated time to settle in and build confidence, allowing you to become
comfortable with the bike’s weight, balance, and overall feel.
This unhurried practice period is designed to help you relax and connect with
the machine at your own pace.

Alongside this, your instructor will guide you through essential motorcycle
maintenance checks, highlighting simple but important tasks you should carry
out regularly to keep your bike safe, reliable, and performing at its best.

TIME TO GET YOU RIDING

This is where the fun really begins. You’ll start learning the core manoeuvres,
with expert guidance every step of the way.
From pulling away and braking to slow control, changing gears,
and making the right observations, you’ll build confidence fast.

Honda

BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT

Before taking to the road, you’ll receive a comprehensive road ride briefing,
clearly explaining what to expect and what’s included in your minimum
two-hour session.

Your instructor will talk you through the route, riding standards,
and safety expectations.
When you’re confident and ready, you’ll head out on the road
to put your new skills into practice.
Honda

PUTTING IT ALL INTO PRACTICE

The road ride must last at least two hours and will take you on a route which will cover a range of different road types and conditions, all of which you will experience in your day-to-day riding.

You will also be asked to complete a U-turn and an emergency stop during this
part of the CBT. Your instructor will have radio contact with you throughout the
duration of your time on the road.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Your CBT is valid for two years, during which time you’ll need to pass both the motorcycle theory and practical tests to keep riding.
There are several licence categories, all tested in the same way but on different bike sizes.
The higher the licence, the more powerful the bikes you can ride, and the older you’ll need to be.

Once you finish your CBT, you’ll be issued a Certificate of Completion (DL196).

Honda

THE AM LICENCE

From 16 years of age, you can take an AM test. You will need to pass a theory test and the two part practical test. If you take your test on an automatic moped you will not be entitled to ride a geared version.

Honda

THE A1 LICENCE

From 17 years old you can elect to take your A1 licence which will entitle you to ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc. You will need to take your Theory test (unless you have a full AM licence) and the two part practical test. Again, if you take your test on an automatic model you cannot ride a geared bike.

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required. Complaints.
